Simple Artisan Bread Recipe

Have you ever been so lazy that instead of getting up, putting on pants, and going to the store like a regular person, you just made your own bread? No? Me neither. 

Believe it or not, I found myself checking out Great Depression recipes for homemade bread. Now whether that was because I was too lazy and broke to go to the store and buy a loaf, or because I actually wanted to do some baking is beside the point.  I actually found a great recipe with only 4 ingredients that made some pretty delicious bread. Minimal work, and tasty bread.

This bread is hearty and heavy, with a soft center and crunchy crust. Literally heaven. Now, the first time I made this, I totally forgot the salt. Which, isn’t absolutely terrible, just maybe not exactly what I was hoping for. Matched with some fresh sliced honeyed ham and some cheddar cheese, this bread also makes some excellent sandwiches, and fills you up fast.

Another great thing about this bread is that it’s really easy for those who don’t make bread that often but want to impress people. Absolutely no kneading required. As long as you know how to stir and turn on an oven, you’ll be fine.

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp yeast
1 1/2 cups very warm water (but not hot)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a bowl, stir the flour, salt, yeast, and water until combined. It doesn’t need to be smooth or perfect. In fact, the messier, the better.
  2. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let sit for 8-24 hours in a pantry or closet. During this time, the dough is going to get all bubbly. That’s the yeast at work.
  3. After dough has rested, dump it all onto a well floured surface, and form it into a ball. Do this by grabbing the edges of the dough and tucking them under, smoothing out the top. Let rest 30 minutes.
  4. Turn your oven on 450 degrees, and place your baking dish into the oven to preheat as well.
  5. After 30 minutes, carefully remove your baking dish from the oven and spray with non-stick spray.
  6. With a sharp knife, slash an X into the top of your dough. Then, carefully pick up your dough ball, and plop it into the baking dish.
  7. Cover the baking dish with a lid or aluminium foil and return the dish to the oven.
  8. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake 10-15 minutes more until top is nicely browned.
  9. Let bread cool at least 15 minutes before slicing to keep the bread from squishing. Enjoy!
